HIV is human immunodeficiency virus. This virus prevents the body's immune system from working properly and makes it hard to fight off infections. Having a test is the only way to tell if you have HIV.

Without treatment when a women has HIV, the virus can pass to others, including her baby, during pregnancy, birth or through breastmilk. If you find out that you have HIV before your baby is born, you can have treatment that will reduce the chance of HIV being passed to your baby.
